River

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night has fallen.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night falls.

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river where my hope is calling.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river where my hope calls.

So much sorrow in this world casting me out for dead.
Some days it seems that the downpour never ends.
Pick myself up just to be knocked down again.

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night has fallen.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night falls.

Some days I’m tempted to cheat my fellow man
Grab the shiny brass ring and take all I can.
Misguided by greed to forget who I am.

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night has fallen.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night falls.

Halfway up the mountain pushing back the stone
The weight of the world laying heavy on my shoulders.
Some days it seems I gotta carry this burden alone….
Oh no, but….

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night has fallen.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night falls.

We’ve come upon a fork here in the road.
One path leads to destruction, another path to home.
Easy to lose hope when you don’t know which way to go.
But…

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night has fallen.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river before night falls.

I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river where my hope is calling.
I am going to make it to the river,
Make it to the river where my hope calls…

Hi Karyn, I love this song River. Trying to figure out how to play it on my guitar. So far, this is what seems to be working but I’m not quite sure if I have all the chords right. I’ve capo-ed up to the 2nd fret and I’m playing E, A for the chorus and then I am playing a A & B7 for the verses – all this on the 2nd fret so I guess I am really playing F#, B for the chorus and then B, C# for the verses. Am I even close? I would love to hear from you. Thx. •Wing-Siu

    • Hallo Wing-Siu,

      Coolio!
You are totally close, yes! Capo 2 is definitely the way to go.

      The chords are:
      Verse:
      F#m – F#m – | B – F#m –
      F#m – F#m – | B – F#m –

      Chorus:
      B – C# – | F#m – F#m –
      B – C# – | F#m – F#m –
      A – B – | C# – C# –

(PS, I play an F#m, not an F#.)

By capoing it up 2 frets, you can also think of it as:

      Verse:
      Em – Em – | A – Em –
      Em – Em – | A – Em –

      Chorus:
      A – B – | Em – Em –
      A – B – | Em – Em –
      G – A – | B – B –

The “G” is a weird chord, kind of out of the key… so I use a low string walk about to get to it from the “Em”.

I’d love to hear your version. :)

      Best,
      Karyn
